Accelerated ELA: We will be working on the Objective Summary; we will be practicing the Objective Summary at first, but hopefully by the second week's end will be working on a Formative Summary. Accelerated students will also begin the Elements of Fiction and Theme. On Friday students will be assessed in their understanding of Academic Vocabulary - this is a Summative Assessment. We will review on Wednesday, and both I and a student have created Quizlets for at home practice. (Thanks, Jeromel!) We will also begin this week with a brief prequiz on Sentence Fragments and Complete Subjects/Predicates. Based upon student performance, we will be breaking into smaller groups to either work with those concepts or move on to more complex ones.

October 6-10
Accelerated ELA: This week we will be refining the Objective Summary; last week the students turned in a Formative Objective Summary on the story "The Washwoman" by Isaac Bashevis Singer. Students will also begin working on our "new" vocabulary program, Word Within the Word (those of you who have had students in either the accelerated or magnet programs will remember this text!), which focuses on Latin and Greek stems. Not only are these two languages the initial basis upon which English is built, but the understanding and knowledge of these stems will benefit the kids as they move on high school and college. We are also working on discovering and developing the theme of a story; the stories we are currently reading and Robert Frost's poem "The Road Not Taken" will function as a theme study by the end of the month. We've begun a grammar study as well - the students struggled with our first mini-quiz last week, so this week we will backtrack, review and reassess by the end of the week
Upcoming Assessments: Friday, October 10: Book Project #2
by Friday, October 10: Subjects & Predicates/Prepositional Phrases
Regular ELA:
This week we will continue working on the Objective Summary; students have a Formative Objective Summary on "Raymond's Run" by Toni Cade Bambara due on Monday. Students will also continue working on vocabulary associated with the stories we are reading in class; as we begin a new story this week ("The Gentleman of Rio En Medio") we will add vocabulary to their running list.
